Surface Laptop Ultra: made for world makers

With the Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft introduces a new top tier to the Surface line-up. It is the most powerful Surface Laptop ever built, engineered in a deep partnership with NVIDIA and made for what Microsoft calls "world makers": the creators, developers and AI builders working with massive datasets, long compile cycles and local AI models. The tagline leaves little to the imagination: *"Not standard issue."*

An NVIDIA Blackwell RTX inside a Surface

For the first time, a Surface Laptop combines a powerful NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU with an ultra-efficient CPU. Together they deliver up to 1 petaflop of AI compute — enough to run models with up to 120 billion parameters locally. Full CUDA support makes the device immediately usable for developer and AI workflows that previously demanded a desktop or the cloud.

The key is its unified memory of up to 128GB: a single memory pool dynamically allocated across CPU and GPU, exactly where the workload needs it. That lets AI creation, 3D rendering and multi-model workflows run simultaneously, without the walls you normally hit.

Local AI as the cure for "token anxiety"

Microsoft positions the device firmly as a local AI platform. Running models directly on the device helps you move faster, experiment more freely and keep your cloud costs in check — Microsoft itself calls it "the cure for token anxiety". When you need frontier-scale intelligence, you scale up to the cloud and the latest models.

Processing sensitive work locally also brings advantages in privacy and latency: data stays on the device and you are not dependent on a connection. Apps can tap into the GPU for AI noise reduction, intelligent masking, video upscaling and AI-assisted code completion — all directly on-device.

Display, design and ports for makers

  • Display — 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen, up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness, 262 ppi and high-precision color accuracy. The brightest display Microsoft has ever shipped on a Surface.
  • Design — less than 18mm thick and under 2 kg, in two finishes: Platinum and the new, dark Nightfall. An all-new thermal system with 2.5× the cooling capacity of the Surface Laptop 7th edition — and it does it all quietly.
  • Ports — a complete, dongle-free set: HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, SD card reader and a headphone jack. The largest haptic touchpad ever on a Surface, over 30% bigger than the previous one.
  • Serviceability — designed to be maintained, with a replaceable SSD, published repair guides and replacement parts available separately. Performance, durability and repairability living together rather than trading against each other.

What does this mean for your organization?

The Surface Laptop Ultra is not an everyday business laptop, but a workstation for the most demanding creative and AI workflows. For organizations working with local AI models, 3D rendering or heavy development environments, this device unlocks performance that previously required a desktop or cloud GPU — now mobile, privacy-friendly and with all-day battery life.

Microsoft will make the device available later this year; pricing has not yet been announced. It is a pre-release product and specifications may still change. You can find more details on the official Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra page.
