Some devices never truly disappear. They step aside for a moment. Are missed. And then return stronger than ever.
That certainly applies to the Dell XPS.
From ultimate business device… to forced farewell
Over the past years, we've delivered hundreds of Dell XPS laptops to our clients. Not without reason. The XPS was known as the ultimate business device: sleek design, high performance, reliable build quality and – crucially – available with Windows Pro and business support.
Until about two years ago.
Dell announced that the XPS line would no longer be a business line, but was positioned as a consumer device. This had concrete consequences:
- Windows Pro no longer always available as standard
- Business support options more limited
- Less clear positioning for professional use
For many organizations, that was a dealbreaker. So we – massively – recommended switching to Microsoft Surface, a fantastic alternative that we still fully support.
Freedom of choice comes first
We don't believe in one size fits all. Strong IT starts with freedom of choice, as long as the device meets our requirements for security, manageability, and performance.
And that's why we're genuinely pleased that Dell has listened.
Dell woke up: XPS is back
At CES 2026, Dell officially announced what many had hoped for: the XPS line is back. Really back.
Not as a weak compromise, but as a repositioning to where the XPS always belonged: the premium segment for professional use.
Dell notably admitted openly that the earlier move was a mistake. Customers, reviewers, and partners were right. Branding matters. User experience matters.
And so: back to the roots.
And what a comeback this is
The new XPS 14 and XPS 16 have been redesigned and feel in every way like a top-class business laptop.
Key USPs at a glance
- Premium unibody design made of CNC-milled aluminum and Gorilla Glass
- Intel Core Ultra (Series 3 / Panther Lake) processors with integrated AI capabilities
- 120Hz InfinityEdge displays, available with OLED and optional touchscreen
- Physical function keys are back (no more touch-like experiments)
- Excellent thermal performance in an exceptionally thin chassis
- Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 4
- Designed with sustainability and repairability in mind (modular USB-C ports)
- Available with Windows Pro and ProSupport for business use
In short: everything you'd expect as a professional.
Universal Preferred Device (rightfully so)
Within our Universal Preferred Devices, the XPS fits perfectly alongside the Microsoft Surface Laptop again. Not as a replacement, but as an equal alternative.
- Working in creative or analytical workloads and need more configuration options? → XPS
- Working mobile, in meetings, and is a touch display and affordability important to you? → Surface
The choice is substantive again. As it should be.
Now for Europe…
Currently, the new XPS models are first available in the US (and Canada). Europe hasn't been officially announced yet, but given the strategic repositioning, we expect – and hope – that the EU will follow soon.
As soon as that happens, the XPS will be fully on our radar again.
Conclusion
The XPS should never have been gone. But sometimes a detour is needed to clearly see what truly has value again.
We say: welcome back, Dell XPS.
An iconic device. A mature choice. And once again a Universal Preferred Device.
